Maureen was a natural athlete and was a fan of tough athletic games. It was this passion that was also matched with the natural ability to perform. She was awarded nearly every Feis Award in the field of Drama and Theater Performance in the nation she was born into. offer. As a teenager, she had been accepted into the Abbey Theater, where her enthusiasm for classical theatre and operatic music was pursued. This course was to be altered, however, when Charles Laughton, after seeing the screen tests of Maureen was captivated by her stunning eyes. Before casting her to star as a character in Jamaica Inn (1939), Laughton and his partner, Erich Pommer, changed her name changed from Maureen FitzSimons to "Maureen O'Hara" which was a little smaller last name to fit the marquee. Maureen was on contract with Laughton to make her next movie in America with RKO Pictures (The Hunchback of Notre Notre Dame 1939). Maureen was able to buy her contract with Laughton after the film was hugely successful. Maureen Laughton was already in two big motion pictures at the age of 19 years old.
